Packaging & Sustainability Technologist

Job Description

We are looking for a Packaging & Sustainability Technologist to join us on-site at our coffee & tea factory in Otara, Auckland. In this factory we roast, blend and package many different products, such as Hummingbird, Jeds & Gravity coffees and Ti Ora & Bell teas. We would like you to come in and take a close look at our packaging process and identify where there is room for improvement. You get to make a real impact on our business and contribute to significant cost and sustainability savings! You will also ensure we comply with the relevant regulations and support with identifying and negotiating with packaging suppliers.

You will be working from our factory in Ōtara 4 days a week and spend approximately 1 day a week at our NZ headquarters in East Tamaki (5 min drive from the factory). You might travel to Australia occasionally to review our Sydney manufacturing site and packaging process. You will report to the Quality & Sustainability Manager ANZ who’s based in Sydney.

Are you up for this challenge? 

In this role, you will:

  • Support with NPD, Productivity and Packaging development projects
  • Initiate, define and execute R&D projects with the aim to deliver cost and complexity reductions
  • Define, organise and lead plant trials, review and complete specifications and issue concise technical reports
  • Comply with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation reporting obligations and the Australasian Recycling Logo (ARL) rollout, and drive the JDE sustainable packaging commitments, including support of the transition to recycle-ready structures and driving down packaging CO2/pack to product ratio
  • Contribute to and collaborate with the Global and APAC R&D Packaging teams
  • Scout and participate in relevant industry bodies/organisations as a spokesperson for JDE Peet’s

For this role as a Packaging & Sustainability Technologist, we’re looking for someone who has the following skills and experience:

  • You have a degree in engineering/packaging technology and/or several years of relevant work experience in packaging technology
  • You preferably have previous FMCG experience
  • You have experience working with a sustainability and recycling focus and ideally completed PREP (Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal) reports before
  • You are a relationship builder – both internal and external – and can manage conflicting interests
  • You understand and are happy to support with packaging supplier negotiations
  • You enjoy working autonomously
  • You are open to travel within NZ and to AU occasionally and open to participate in regular global meetings outside of office hours (i.e., approximately 1x a week in the evening)
  • You have valid NZ working rights
